On August 1st, 2024, I hosted a reception for my art exhibition, “Immortal Photograph.” The exhibition included 10 watercolor paintings and 10 etching prints, all inspired by Victorian tintype photography. Taking place at the Philadelphia Sketch Club (PSC), the reception lasted from 1-3PM, coinciding with a group photography exhibition, PHOTOgraphy 2024. The event included friends, family, past teachers, community members from PSC, and new acquaintances. Besides visual art, music was also included through singer/songwriter, Julia Melito, who performed both covers and original pieces. During the reception, I was able to interact with many different people and talk about my art with them. It was a wonderful experience being able to share that part of myself.
I would like to thank Marybeth Gasman, Josie Rowley, Julia Melito, and Brian Melito for helping me put together this exhibition, as well as all the other support I received from the PSC community, and my friends and family.
Check out my work as well as my artist statement below.
Immortal Photograph is focused in its subject, more limited in its palette, and larger in its size than my previous work. It continues my practice of depicting figures across time but focuses on a particular setting: the American Southwest during the Victorian Era. The paintings and prints resemble “tintype photographs,” a common technique of photography at the time. The figures I draw are not random people, but characters with backstories and personalities. I created these pieces because I wanted to explore each character’s past and their relationships with one another. Through this collection of watercolor paintings and mixed media etching prints, I portray people from different eras to show why they matter, and why they still connect with us today.
If you would like to see my show in person, there is still time left! The exhibition will be taken down on August 28th, so try to head over before it closes. There will also be an open house reception on August 25th, highlighting both exhibitions. I hope you can make it!
