When Katherine aka "Kitty" had to wear hand-me-downs from her mom and big sister, she made the most of things by developing her own unique style. She pairs older pieces from the previous decade, with thrift store finds and hand-made garments. While some of her peers may see her as "out of fashion", Kitty has always preferred 60s mini skirts and kitten heels. Her look emulates 60s icons such as Twiggy, wearing bold colors and simple chunky patterns, as well as 70s actresses like Brenda Sykes. I was also inspired by Andie (Molly Ringwald) from the 80s movie "Pretty in Pink", when considering Kitty's relationship with fashion. Like Andie, Kitty creates her own style through what she finds, but unfortunately this goes under-appreciated by people her age.
Kitty is a naturally stylish dresser, but most importantly a huge nerd! She loves all things Star Trek and molecular biology. Uhura is her icon and inspiration, including when it comes to fashion. Nyota Uhura, played by Nichelle Nicholes, was also essential to Kitty's design, because of how influential she was during this era, especially to a young geeky black girl. Uhura plays an integral role in Star Trek as the Chief Communication officer of Starship Enterprise, with talents in linguistics and philology, and a spunky, as well as, playful personality. I imagined that seeing a character like Uhura would play a big part in Kitty's life growing up. She continues to be a role model to Kitty, as does the entire crew of the Starship Enterprise.
